Berkeley Chess School offers occasional classes for adults ranging from novice to intermediate on Friday evenings at The School of the Madeleine, in Berkeley. Students over age 14 can attend these classes. The minimum number of students required to form a class is 8. We also offer seminars for the advanced player.

We also facilitate private, one-on-one lessons, which are arranged by the student with the chess instructor. Payment for these classes is paid directly to the chess instructor. If you would like private lessons, please email elizabeth@berkeleychessschool.org. Include a description of your previous chess experience and USCF rating, if applicable, and we will connect you with an instructor who can meet your needs.

We are currently offering a novice/intermediate level class beginning Friday May 12th from 6-7pm. Register for this class below.

  • The session is for beginners who already know piece movement. Topics covered include: castling, pawn promotion, en passant, opening principles, and elementary tactics and strategy.

If you are unsure of what level you need, you may attend the class, one time, free of charge to see which one is right for you. If you want USChess and FIDE rated tournaments, please see our list of tournaments.
