With a win over world number 29 GM Peter Svidler yesterday, Sam advances to the 6th Round of the FIDE World Cup! 207 of the world’s strongest grandmasters began this knockout tournament on July 10th, and now Sam is among the last 8 players. He will play GM Karjakin next in the Quarterfinals, GM Shankland has qualified for the Fide Grand Prix and will Qualify for the 2022 Candidates Tournament with two more victories.

 

Sam began learning chess with The Berkeley Chess School at Glorietta Elementary school in Orinda as a 5th grader, and continued learning and playing at our Walnut Creek Friday Night program. He also teaches special classes for BCS, and is our Grandmaster in residence.
