Elizabeth Shaughnessy Receives Chess Educator of the Year Award from University of Texas Dallas - February 2011

The University of Texas, Dallas, awarded Elizabeth Shaughnessy the prestigious Chess Educator of the Year Award on February 23, 2011. The ChessFest X award presentation took place after Elizabeth discussed the continuing need for organized chess education programs in the U.S. in her talk titled "The Importance of Chess in the American Community." ChessFest is a joint presentation of the UT Dallas Chess Program and McDermott Library.

BCS Alumnus & Instructor becomes Grandmaster!

Congratulations to BCS Alumnus and 2010 BCS Master Class Instructor Sam Shankland for winning his final Grandmaster norm at the Berkeley International in January 2011! As many of you know, apart from World Champion, Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can attain. Once achieved, the title is held for life. Well done, Sam!
