Five Teams In Close Contention

On May 3, 2008 the Berkeley Chess School held its annual Year End Team Tournament for the Berkeley Area. One hundred and twenty three students from thirty-one area schools took part.

In a battle that was decided only in the final round, Havens School won first place over four other close contenders, Head-Royce Academy, Bentley, Beach, and Chinese Christian. The race was so even that Head-Royce, Bentley and Beach ended up in a three-way tie for second, with tie-breaking points deciding the final order. Chinese Christian Academy finished close behind the first four.

Oceanview and Marin ended up in a tie for the next slots. J.O. Ford School of Richmond, which is a recent participant in the BCS program, for the third straight year finished among the top ten teams.

National Life Master Roger Poehlman pored over the top games for several hours before awarding the best game to Miranda Christ of Bentley School. Roger presented and analyzed this game during the final awards ceremony. Congratulations Miranda for winning the Best Game trophy.

Congratulations also to Michael Wang from Havens who finished the tournament with a perfect 6.0 score.

Thanks to you all--parents and students--for your hard work and good spirit. We look forward to seeing you at summer camp and at your school next fall.
