Looking at the results from our recent Berkeley Area Team Tournament, three things are apparent: First, even more than usual the top scorers attend our advanced classes on Friday night, which includes a rated tournament game every time. Second, we have a great new generation of strong girl players. Members of our Queens Team took three of the first eight places and six of the first sixteen.
The final thing that struck us is that Ocean View elementary of Albany has a MONSTER team! Led by perfect score winner Jonathan Shan, Ocean View came in with an almost unheard of 20.0 points. Havens elementary came in clear second with 17.0 points and Head-Royce was third with 16.5. Beach and Prospect Sierra came next with 15.5 points each.
As for the individual players, Jack Hirsch of Head Royce was right behind Jonathan Shan with a nearly unblemished 5.5 and he did take home the best game trophy. Seven more players were right behind with 5.0 points including David Deng and William Li of Ocean View. Thanks to all 111 participants for making this a great event. We look forward to seeing you at summer camp and then returning to your school in the fall.
A special thanks also to all the parent volunteers who helped make this tournament a success, including Hsiu Hui for the great photos, Lauren Lee and Zhen Wang for assembling trophies, Kristin Leimkuhler for crowd control between rounds, and our student volunteers who helped in the tournament hall.
