Volunteer Profile

We at the Berkeley Chess School would like to acknowledge two very special families who work for Chevron and took advantage of Chevron's "Day Of Giving" community outreach program to volunteer for the Berkeley Chess School and raise money for us at the same time!

One, a chess mom and employee of Chevron who lives on the 680 corridor volunteered her computer expertise for 20 hours in November and December 2009 to help the Berkeley Chess School coordinate our various chess programs, including our outreach program in Oakland (read here for more information on this exciting program). Her son is an advanced chess player on the Berkeley Bishops team and who plays frequently in Berkeley Chess School tournaments. His mom took the opportunity to volunteer for us during these tournaments while her son played chess.

Our other wonderful Chevron volunteer who lives in the East Bay also devoted 20 hours of volunteer time spread over many Friday nights in the fall and winter of 2009 while his elementary-school-aged son took chess lessons and played in Berkeley's Friday Night Tournament. This chess dad bravely agreed to learn the intricacies of tournament directing, with the goal of volunteering at future tournaments, especially our celebratory chess tournament that caps each year of chess instruction in our Oakland Chess program (read hear about last year's tournament). His wife also tirelessly volunteers for the Berkeley Chess School in our parent volunteer work parties.

Each of these volunteers, in addition to their valuable time and labor, raised $500 in donations that Chevron has donated to the Berkeley Chess School.
We thank you for your gracious generosity!
