Friday Night Chess

The Berkeley Chess School offers Friday Night Chess classes for K-12 students at Hillside School in Berkeley and at Civic Arts Education, Shadelands, in Walnut Creek.

The classes are 90 minutes long, from 5:30 - 7:00 pm, and are followed by a tournament game, from 7:00 to 8:00 pm, which give the students a fun opportunity to get tournament experience.

Depending on enrollment, we will offer four levels, beginner, intermediate I and II, and advanced. To qualify for the advanced class, students should be rated 1000 or above or be recommended by their school chess instructor. The advanced class will be taught by National Master Roger Poehlmann.

Walnut Creek Class

We offer two levels: Beginner/Intermediate, and Advanced. To qualify for the advanced class, students should be rated 1000 or above or be recommended by their school chess instructor. The advanced class will be taught by Master Robert Hamm.
