June 4th Berkeley Quad Wrap Up is Now Live!



On June 4th, The Berkeley Chess School hosted our first Quad Tournament of the summer at Hillside! The complete write-up is here - check out photos of the tournament, standings from each Quad, and the Best Game winner, analyzed by FIDE master and BCS instructor Robin Cunningham!

Ready for more? Join us for the next rated Quad tournament on July 23rd in Berkeley, and ongoing summer Friday night Bughouse & Pizza tournaments!

Ben and Josiah qualify for the World Youth Chess Championships in Brazil!
We at the Berkeley Chess School would like to congratulate Ben Rood and Josiah Stearman for being invited to represent America as USA Delegates for the World Youth Chess Championship that is being held in Caldas Novas, Brazil in November 2011! The invitation for the World Youth Chess Championship is an incredibly prestigious and this tournament has produced such chess greats as Garry Kasparov, Varuzhan Akobian, Sam Shankland, Sam Collins, and many others!




Josiah Stearman's rating of 1721 (and gaining!) qualifies him for the World Youth Chess Championship!




Ben Rood's title as 1st Grade National Champion at the 2011 National Elementary (K-6) Championship in Dallas, Texas, earned him the invitation to play for the USA at the World Youth Chess Championship.

Congratulations to both for such an achievement!

Scholastic Tournament Results, now online!
For the students who play in the Walnut Creek Friday Night Scholastic Tournaments, you can now view your results online as well as the Scholastic Tournaments in Berkeley! The results will be updated every Monday morning and will stay current right up until your next game the following Friday. You can find the results for Walnut Creek here. If you play in the Berkeley Scholastic Tournament, you can find your results here. The cross-tables can also be found under "Our Programs" and then "Friday Night Chess" and then "Walnut Creek Friday night Tournament Results"!

End of Year Team Championship Tournament Results Now Online!
On May 7th, the Berkeley Chess School hosted the End of Year Team Championship Tournament at Cragmont Elementary. The results from the tournament are now online and can be seen here.


Congratulations to Oceanview Elementary for taking 1st place at the tournament and a congratulations is also in order for David Deng and Sean Donovan for going undefeated and posting a 6-0 record for the day. We would like to thank all the players who came to represent their school and play competitive chess!

Berkeley Chess School Student Ben Rood Wins National Title!

Ben Rood tied for 1st place (in the K-1 section) at the 2011 National Elementary (K-6) Championship which took place May 6 through May 8th at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas. This is another great milestone for Ben, who learns from FIDE Master Robin Cunningham at Berkeley Chess School's weekly Friday night program and also participates in Berkeley Chess School's exclusive Orinda Advanced Tuesday chess class. Congratulations, Ben!
