Berkeley Chess School Alum and Instructor Sam Shankland Wins Big at 2011 US Chess Championship

Sam Shankland vied for and won a third-place finish in the 2011 U.S. Chess Championship, which was held in St. Louis, Missouri, at the end of April. His victory came with a $20,000 prize. At 19, Sam Shankland—who grew up attending the Berkeley Chess School, earned his Grandmaster title in Berkeley this past January, and is slotted to return as a BCS instructor this summer—has already traveled the globe, competed against the world's elite and played professionally. He currently attends Brandeis University. Congratulations on another amazing achievement, Sam!

Elizabeth Shaughnessy Receives Chess Educator of the Year Award from University of Texas Dallas - February 2011

The University of Texas, Dallas, awarded Elizabeth Shaughnessy the prestigious Chess Educator of the Year Award on February 23, 2011. The ChessFest X award presentation took place after Elizabeth discussed the continuing need for organized chess education programs in the U.S. in her talk titled "The Importance of Chess in the American Community." ChessFest is a joint presentation of the UT Dallas Chess Program and McDermott Library.
