BCS president Elizabeth Shaughnessy has been named a Bank of America Local Hero™. This award is given to five community leaders in each of the bank's 45 markets around the country who “exemplify the highest standards in community service". Read more
Chess Students Showed Greater Gains on Math Test Scores and Better School Attendance, New Study Shows
An independent study conducted by the educational consulting firm Berkeley Policy Associates shows students in the BCS Oakland Chess Program who took chess for 20 or more weeks had significantly higher score gains on the math portion of the California Standards Test(CST), as well as better school attendance, than their non-chess taking peers.
