2nd Grade Tournament
BCS chess instructor Jorge Barrera writes about the final game between Ford students Ricardo and Jose during the BCS First Moves Program second-grade tournament, which took place between the second grade in-school and after-school classes at the end of the 2006 school year:
"Ricardo made a pretty good plan that got him the win. Both players did what I keep repeating is the best way to start a game (Open with a center pawn, bring out all of your pieces, try to control the center). Soon, Ricardo captured some of those pieces, and instead of trying to attack the king right away, he made a pretty good plan. First, he traded pieces. Knight for a knight, bishop for a bishop, queen for a queen, and soon enough those few pieces he was ahead by (a rook and a few pawns), were very powerful. Then, he blocked the opponent’s king to get one of those extra pawns to the end, and once with a Rook and a Queen, he finished it with a “rook roller”. I was very pleased with this, as he basically showed all the different things that I have showed them throughout the year in just one game."
