All-girls-header
Year End Berkeley 2006

This year's Berkeley-Area tournament was up for grabs. With defending champ Havens elementary losing its strongest members to middle school and with a record-setting attendance of 125 eager chess players, what would happen?

Answer: the dedicated kids from Jensen Ranch school came away the champs with a strong 19.5 points. Not only do these students have chess at their school, many of them also had private lessons at home with excellent BCS teachers. In second place was Marin (Albany) with 16.0 points and just behind was Bentley with 15.0. Last year's champion Havens was 13th this year with 10.0 points. In all, students from 31 schools participated.

Special mention should be made for two schools. Crossroads Christian School came in an excellent eighth place (13.0) in their first year of chess classes. J.O. Ford Elementary came in ninth place (12.5) and most of their children were playing in their first tournament! (To read about our special program at J.O. Ford, click here).

Alex Zinoman won the Perfect Score trophy. Hwai-Ray Tung won Best Game.

Thanks to everyone for coming and showing off your moves. We will see you at Summer Camp and next year at your school.
