Berkeley Chess School offers classes for adults ranging from novice to intermediate on Thursday evenings at The Berkeley Chess School. Students over age 14 can attend these classes. The minimum number of students required to form a class is 8. We also offer seminars for the advanced player.

We also facilitate private, one-on-one lessons, which are arranged by the student with the chess instructor. Payment for these classes is paid directly to the chess instructor. If you would like private lessons, please email elizabeth@berkeleychessschool.org. Include a description of your previous chess experience and USCF rating, if applicable, and we will connect you with an instructor who can meet your needs.

We are currently offering a novice/intermediate level class beginning Thursday 5:30-7:30pm. Register for this class below.

  • The session is for beginners who already know piece movement. Topics covered include: castling, pawn promotion, en passant, opening principles, and elementary tactics and strategy.

If you are unsure of what level you need, you may attend the class, one time, free of charge to see which one is right for you. If you want USChess and FIDE rated tournaments, please see our list of tournaments.

We offer a Women’s Class from January 25th – March 1st. Every Tuesday from 7-8:30pm online via Zoom. Each meeting will include a 45 minute mini tournament. Instructor is Amy Beale. If you would like to request a registration form please contact Programs@Berkeleychessschool.org
