In Memoriam

 Alan Scott Glasscoe

March 9th, 1943 – June 30th, 2025

Alan Glasscoe, longtime Director of the Berkeley Chess Club, former President of CalChess (1989) and a founding board member of the Berkeley Chess School, passed June 30th, 2025 in Oakland, CA, at the age of 82.  Please join us for a celebration of his life Saturday, August 2nd, 7 – 8:30 pm, at the Berkeley Chess School.

Alan loved chess.  He shared a birthday with Bobby Fischer, and like Fischer, he dedicated much of his life to the game.  He became an assistant National Tournament Director (1988), co-authored a book on the Budapest Defense (Thinker’s Press, 1980), and served as associate editor of the California Chess Journal (1991). His wry, acerbic humor was on display in his writing, and in his life.  Help us celebrate that life.  BCS Founder Elizabeth will open the memorial with a short remembrance, and then we will share stories about Alan.  Light refreshments will be served.  Please RSVP to Elizabeth at elizabeth@berkeleychessschool.org for this gathering of Alan’s friends and colleagues.  We hope to see you there!
